چکیده

Background/objectives Moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) and breaks in sedentary time (BST) have been proposed as viable solutions to improve an older adult's independence, whereas (ST) has associated with detrimental effects. We sought assess the joint effects of ST, BST, MVPA on independence adults determine whether what extent ST relationship is moderated by and/or BST. Design Cross-sectional. Setting Laboratory Exercise Health, Faculty Human Kinetics. Participants Older (≥65 years old) from national surveillance system Portugal (n = 821). Measurements Physical were assessed accelerometry. was using a 12-item composite function (CPF) questionnaire. Multiple linear regression used model outcomes. Results Higher related lower CPF score (β −0.01, p < 0.0001), higher better 0.02, 0.0001). BST not after accounting for 0.03, 0.074). had moderating effect (p where ≥36.30 min/day ameliorated significant inverse between CPF. Engaging ≥107.78 resulted having positive score. No moderation found > 0.05). Conclusion Regardless spent inversely However, be moderator such that engaging at least 36 may blunt negative ST. At high levels (≥108 min/day), some actually provide benefit ability maintain independence.

Associations of sedentary behavior and physical activity with older adults’ physical function: an isotemporal substitution approach

BACKGROUNDS The purpose of this study was to examine, in a sample of Japanese older adults, the associations of objectively-assessed sedentary behavior (SB) and physical activity (PA) with performance-based physical function. The isotemporal substitution (IS) approach was used to model simultaneously the effects of the specific activity being performed and the activity being displaced, in an eq...

The Effect of Physical Activity Based on Intergenerational Programs on the Quality of Life of Older Adults

Objectives Quality of Life (QOL) is an important indicator in health evaluation, and its improvement reflects the preservation and enhancement of the physical and mental health of the elderly people. The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of sport intervention based on intergenerational programs on the QOL of older adults. Methods & Materials The is a quasi-experimental study with...

Physical activity moderates time-of-day differences in older adults' working memory performance.

Based on a synthesis of the literature on time of day and physical fitness effects on cognition, the current study examined whether physical activity moderated time-of-day differences in older adults' performance on a working memory task. Sedentary older adults' working memory performance declined significantly from morning to evening, whereas more active older adults performed similarly across...

Objectively assessed physical activity, sedentary time, and coronary artery calcification in healthy older adults.

OBJECTIVE Physical activity is related to lower risk of cardiovascular disease, but data relating to coronary lesions have been conflicting. These inconsistencies may in part be due to unreliable assessment of physical activity and limitations imposed by self-reported data. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between objectively measured physical activity and coronary ar...

The impact of moderate intensity physical activity on cardiac structure and performance in older sedentary adults☆

BACKGROUND Sedentary aging leads to adverse changes in vascular function and cardiac performance. We published improvements in vascular function with moderate intensity physical activity (PA) in continuous bouts. Whether moderate intensity PA also impacts cardiac structure and cardiovascular performance of the aging left ventricle (LV) is unknown. METHODS We recruited and analyzed results fro...
